Four Door

This the 2nd installation that I created in Bell Woods. After my experience with “Orange”, I was still fascinated by fabric and bold colors. Stemming from the Jean-Claude / Christo pieces that I love so much I wanted to dye fabric and experiment with mixing my own colors.

Playing with demensions

I found cotton material at Joanne Fabric and various, base colors of RIT fabric dye to work with. I mixed several batches and settled on a red, orange, purple and blue that I was happy with. Ultimately, the orange and red were not as vivid as my vision, but for a first try, they worked.

The second part of the vision, and based on location, was to have the material float, off the ground. I liked the patterns and design of several wood doors and thought I would use that form, with the floating fabric, to create a door to another dimension. The 12-panel and 6-panel doors are a classic design. the 5-panel and 2-panel are more modern.

Door sketches

After dying the fabric, I cut the panels for each door and bought a cheap sewing machine to sew the pieces together. After sewing together, I strung nylon cord through the tops and bottoms and secured to trees approx 12-18 inches off the ground.
